The Colorado Rockies scored six runs in the first two innings, then withstood a furious ninth-inning rally to notch an 8-7 victory over the Chicago Cubs Sunday to complete a three-game sweep.
Troy Tulowitzki’s ground-rule double scored Jonathan Herrera and Jason Giambi brought Carlos Gonzalez home a batter later with a sacrifice fly to give Colorado a 2-0 lead after one frame.
The Rockies blew it open in the second when Herrera singled in a run, pitcher Jorge De La Rosa and Dexter Fowler scored on a Derrek Lee error and Tulowitzki plated another with a groundout to give the Rockies six runs before they recorded six outs.
De La Rosa (4-3) faced the bases-loaded with two outs in the top of the first, but got Alfonso Soriano to strike out and end the threat. From there De La Rosa managed to throw 6 2/3 innings, yielding three runs on eight hits and two walks. He struck out five.
Carlos Silva (10-5) took the loss even though he only recorded one out. He left an injury after allowing Tulowitzki’s two-run double. He was charged with two runs, two hits and a walk in just 1/3 of an inning.
James Russell followed with 2 2/3 innings of relief, giving up four runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk.
Carlos Zambrano pitched two relief innings for Chicago as well, giving up RBI singles to Ian Stewart and Fowler which extended the score to 8-1.
Chicago scored two runs in the seventh and Soriano hit a solo shot in the eighth to cut the score to 8-4.
The Cubs made interesting in the ninth, when Starlin Castro flied out to start the inning, but Huston Street then walked Lee and Geovany Soto. Marlon Byrd brought those two in with a triple, making Alfonso Soriano the tying run.
Soriano launched a ball to right-center field, but Fowler made a diving catch at the fence to take the game-tying homer away from Soriano. Fowler had to leave the game after colliding with the wall, but it preserved the victory as Street struck out Jeff Baker to end the game.
