Drew Stubbs homered three times and drove in five runs as the Cincinnati Reds mashed seven homers en route to a 14-3 pasting of the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.
Paul Janish homered and drove in three and Jonny Gomes blasted his 10th homer of the season for the Reds, who took three of four in the series and have won 10 of 13 overall.
A solo shot by Stubbs, a two-run triple by Ramon Hernandez and Janish’s two-run homer had Cincinnati clinging to a 5-3 lead heading into the seventh inning. But the Reds really got to Cubs starter Ted Lilly in that frame, homering four times - capped by Stubbs’ three-run shot - in an eight-run burst. Brandon Phillips started the rally with a solo homer - his 11th of the season.
The offensive explosion allowed starter Mike Leake to snap a four-start winless streak, as the rookie right-hander allowed three runs and eight hits while striking out five in six innings. Leake did not suffer a loss in any of his first 11 major league starts, but had allowed 17 runs in 22 1/3 innings over his previous four outings.
Tyler Colvin accounted for all of Chicago’s runs, racing to a two-run inside-the-park homer in the second and adding a solo shot in the sixth.
