Rookie Neil Walker belted a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth inning, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates a 3-2 win over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.
Garrett Jones also homered for the Pirates, who have won seven of the eight meetings this season. The Pirates have recorded five straight home wins over the Cubs for the first time since June 26, 1991-July 16, 1992.
Xavier Nady hit a two-run home run for Chicago, which has lost three straight and four of its last five.
Nady’s homer in the third had been the difference before Walker drove a 0-1 fastball from Ted Lilly (1-5) into the left field seats for his first career home run.
Andrew McCutchen drew a one-out walk prior to the blast.
Joel Hanrahan (2-1) pitched a perfect eighth to earn the win. Octavio Dotel struck out pinch-hitter Derrek Lee in the ninth for his 12th save in 14 opportunities.
Chicago continues to struggle offensively. The Cubs have scored just 10 runs in their last five games.
Nady replaced the struggling Lee in the lineup, and responded by going 4-for-4 with a two-run homer off Jeff Karstens in the third. Karstens allowed two runs and six hits in six innings.
Jones’ second homer in as many days in the fourth off Ted Lilly cut the lead to 2-1.
Lilly is winless in his last seven starts. He allowed three runs and six hits in 7 2/3 innings Tuesday.
