Tyler Colvin’s pinch-hit double to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a scoreless tie and sent the Chicago Cubs to a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday afternoon.
Mike Fontenot opened the frame with a triple when Dodgers outfielder Xavier Paul misplayed the ball as it rolled to the fence. Following a strikeout, Colvin laced a base knock down the line off starter John Ely for the game-winner.
Ely (3-2), who was making his first start in his native Chicago, was cruising up until that point. The rookie right-hander allowed just four hits in 7 1/3 innings before exiting. The loss snapped a personal three-game winning streak.
Sean Marshall pitched an inning in relief of starter Ted Lilly to earn the win and Carlos Marmol struck out three in the ninth to nail down his 11th save.
Derrek Lee and Kosuke Fukudome had Chicago’s other two hits as they tallied just four for the game in taking two of three in the series.
Lilly was sharp in the no-decision, pitching seven innings of scoreless ball. He allowed just three hits and struck out five.
Casey Blake led the way with a pair of hits for Los Angeles, which did not record an extra-base hit.
