Ryan Church made his first home run of the season a big one -- a two-run, go-ahead shot in the sixth inning that helped the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 3-2 win over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.
All of the game's runs were scored on homers, but the Pirates made theirs count more. Church's shot off Ryan Dempster came after Garrett Jones reached on an infield single with two outs and would stand as the game-winner.
Andy LaRoche also homered for Pittsburgh, hitting his third of the season -- a solo shot in the first.
Paul Maholm (2-2) repeatedly worked out of jams, allowing eight hits and three walks but only two runs. Both came on solo homers -- Alfonso Soriano hit his seventh of the season to lead off the fourth and Geovany Soto added his fourth during the sixth.
Pittsburgh's bullpen worked three innings without allowing a hit. Octavio Dotel pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save, his first since April 12 against Cincinnati.
Dempster (2-2) turned in his fifth quality start in six outings, giving up three runs on eight hits over seven innings. But for the fourth time this season, the Cubs scored only two runs behind him.
Soriano has homered in four consecutive games, hitting five home runs during that span, and Cubs leadoff man Ryan Theriot had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
