Brian McCann drove in a pair and Martin Prado scored a pair of runs as the Atlanta Braves came from behind to beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 8-6, on Friday.
Jason Heyward, Derrek Lee and Melky Cabrera added RBIs in a six-run sixth inning for the Braves, who remained one game behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East.
Atlanta trailed 4-2 going into the sixth and Chris Carpenter (15-6) looked to be in complete control for the Cardinals. But Brooks Conrad and Omar Infante led off the inning with back-to-back singles and Carpenter couldn’t stop the bleeding. Heyward followed with an RBI single to cut it to 4-3 and Prado tied it up with an RBI double.
Two more runs scored when McCann’s hit two right was misplayed by John Jay and Lee ended Carpenter’s night when he followed with another RBI single. Cabrera capped the frame with a sacrifice fly.
St. Louis tried to battle back with two runs in the seventh but Takashi Saito tossed a scoreless eighth and Billy Wagner shut the door in the ninth with his 33rd save. Peter Moylan (6-2) was credited with the win.
The loss dropped the Cardinals 6 ½ games behind the Braves in the wild card race.
