David Wright's throwing error in the bottom of the ninth allowed pinch-runner Brent Clevlen to score the winning run and lift the Atlanta Braves to a 3-2 victory Tuesday night at Turner Field.
Troy Glaus opened the scoring with his sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot off Johan Santana in the third, but the Mets tied it with a pair of homers off Kris Medlen in the fifth by Ike Davis and Jeff Francoeur.
The bullpens kept it there until Atlanta's unorthodox rally in the ninth against Jenrry Mejia (0-3), who came on after Pedro Feliciano gave up a leadoff single to Brian McCann. McCann was lifted for pinch-runner Clevlen. Mejia walked Yunel Escobar and seemed to dodge a bullet when Melky Cabrera couldn't get down a sacrifice bunt.
But Wright's throw on Cabrera's chopper to third was up the first-base line and arrived at the same time as Cabrera, who was credited with an infield single. It deflected away from first baseman Ike Davis, allowing Clevlen to score from third.
Both starters pitched well, as Santana gave up two runs on five hits over seven innings and Medlen went 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Billy Wagner (3-0) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win and split of the two-game divisional series.
Braves manager Bobby Cox added to his major league record for ejections when he was thrown out in the top of the ninth for arguing with first-base umpire Ron Kulpa.
