Kyle Blanks had three hits and drove in a career-high five runs and eight different players had an RBI for the San Diego Padres in Monday’s 17-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves.
The Padres pounded out 19 hits for the game and scored 10 runs in the fourth inning in their home opener.
Tony Gwynn Jr. knocked in three runs, Will Venable had a two-run homer and finished a double shy of the cycle, and Nick Hundley and starting pitcher Kevin Correia had two RBIs apiece.
The Padres roughed up Braves starter Jair Jurrjens (0-1), who allowed eight runs on eight hits before being pulled after 3 1/3 innings.
Reliever Jo-Jo Reyes didn’t enjoy much more success, getting tagged for nine runs on 10 hits over the ensuing three-plus innings.
Correia (1-1) went 5 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits to earn the victory. Relievers Edward Muujica and Adam Russell combined to keep the Braves hitless the rest of the way.
San Diego enjoyed a 14-0 lead through five innings before Troy Glaus and Jason Hayward had RBI singles to make it 14-2.
