Ronny Cedeno came through with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the opener of a three-game series on Friday.
Esmerling Vasquez (1-6) walked Andrew McCutchen and Ryan Doumit to set the stage for Cedeno, who singled to center to bring McCutchen home with the winning run.
Evan Meek (5-4) recorded two outs in the ninth to pick up the win for the Pirates, who snapped a four-game losing streak.
Pittsburgh took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo home run by Neil Walker, his 11th of the season.
Arizona struck for two runs in the third on an RBI double by Gerardo Parra and an RBI single by Stephen Drew. The Pirates tied the game at 2 in the fifth on an RBI double by Jose Tabata.
The teams traded runs in the seventh. Arizona had a brief 3-2 lead after Parra stroked another RBI double, but the Pirates came right back in the bottom half and tied it at 3-3 on a solo homer by Doumit, his 13th of the year.
