Josh Willingham and Ryan Zimmerman homered to lift Washington to a 5-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.
Ian Desmond hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh off reliever Jordan Norberto (0-2) for a 4-3 Nationals lead. Zimmerman added his 24th homer in the eighth against Esmerling Vasquez.
Washington rookie starter Stephen Strasburg, coming off his worst performance of the season, allowed three runs – one earned – on five hits in five innings. He had seven strikeouts and no walks in taking a no-decision.
Tyler Clippard (9-6) got the win and Drew Storen pitched a perfect ninth for his second save.
Arizona scored three runs in the second. Adam LaRoche, who was 3-for-4, led off with a homer against Strasburg. Mark Reynolds singled and scored on Strasburg’s throwing error, which sent Stephen Drew to third. Gerardo Parra plated Drew with a sacrifice fly.
Ivan Rodriguez pulled the Nationals to within 3-1 with an RBI single in the second, while Willingham's two-run homer in the fourth tied the score at 3.
Arizona starter Barry Enright allowed three runs on six hits in five innings.
