Daniel Hudson and two relievers combined on a three-hitter and Justin Upton snapped a tie with an RBI single as the Arizona Diamondbacks posted a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres.

Adam LaRoche went 2-for-4 with a homer for the Diamondbacks, who have won four of their last six games.

The Diamondbacks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning when LaRoche led off with a blast to right field, his 18th home run of the season. The Padres answered in the third as Will Venable opened the frame with his 10th homer of the year.

Arizona quickly regained its advantage in the bottom of the third against Jon Garland (10-8), who retired the first two batters before walking Stephen Drew and Kelly Johnson. Upton followed with a single to center field, plating Drew for a 2-1 edge.

Hudson (2-0) made it stand, keeping San Diego in check before exiting in the eighth. The 23-year old, who pitched eight innings in his Diamondbacks debut on Sunday after being acquired from the Chicago White Sox, allowed one run and three hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 7 2/3 frames.

Jordan Norberto recorded the final out of the eighth and Aaron Heilman worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save in nine opportunities.

Garland surrendered two runs and three hits in seven innings for the Padres, who have lost 13 of their last 17 at Chase Field. The former Diamondbacks right-hander, who walked six and struck out four, fell to 0-3 lifetime as a visitor against Arizona.
