Matt Cain threw a complete-game one-hitter to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 5-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night.
The only hit the right-hander allowed was an opposite-field double off the bat of Mark Reynolds in the second inning. Cain (3-4) faced just two over the minimum, striking out a season-high nine and not issuing a walk. He hit one batter while throwing 122 pitches.
It was Cain’s 10th career complete game and third shutout. Over the last 17 innings, he has allowed just six hits and no earned runs en route to a May ERA of 1.81.
Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval had two hits, including a solo homer in the eighth inning, and three RBIs to lead the way. Freddy Sanchez and Aaron Rowand each also drove in a run.
Arizona starter Edwin Jackson fell to 3-6 despite a steady performance. He allowed three earned runs with five walks and seven strikeouts over seven innings as the Diamondbacks lost their fifth in row.
