Ian Kennedy and the Ariona Diamondbacks' bullpen combined to throw an eight-hit shutout, the team’s first of the season, in Tuesday’s 1-0 win over the Houston Astros.
Kennedy (2-1) went 6 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Right-handers Juan Gutierrez, who went 1 1/3 innings, and Chad Qualls, who earned his sixth save with a perfect ninth inning, followed to preserve the shutout.
Kennedy, who was acquired in the offseason from the New York Yankees, picked up his second straight win following four winless starts to open the campaign.
Arizona managed just five hits, with its lone run coming in the form of a Justin Upton home run to center field in the third inning.
Houston starter Roy Oswalt (2-4) was the hard-luck loser, despite giving up just one run and five hits in seven innings while striking out eight and walking three.
The defeat was the Astros eighth in a row.
