Kelly Johnson’s solo home run in the top of the 10th inning gave the Arizona Diamondbacks a 12-11 victory over the Colorado Rockies in Wednesday’s finale of a three-game set.
Chris Young homered and drove in five runs and Justin Upton and Adam LaRoche each drove in a pair of runs as the Diamondbacks surrendered a 6-0 lead by allowing 11 straight runs before fighting their way back.
Johnson opened the 10th with his homer off Franklin Morales (0-2), the sixth pitcher used by the Rockies.
The Diamondbacks scored three runs in the fifth and two more in the eighth on Johnson’s RBI groundout and a run-producing single from Tony Abreu to even things at 11-11.
Arizona had a chance to take the lead with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth when John Hester grounded into a fielder’s choice that resulted in Mark Reynolds being called out at home. Arizona manager A.J. Hinch was ejected from the game for arguing the call.
Bob Howry (1-0) worked two innings in relief for the win and Juan Gutierrez tossed a perfect 10th inning for his first save.
Carlos Gonzalez homered, drove in two runs and scored twice and Troy Tulowitzki, Melvin Mora and Matt Belisle all notched two RBIs for Colorado.
