Gaby Sanchez homered twice and drove in six runs as the Florida Marlins routed the Tampa Bay Rays 14-9 at St. Petersburg, Fla., Friday night.
Anibal Sanchez (6-3) picked up the win for the Marlins, which led 10-0 in the top of the fourth inning.
Florida roughed up Rays’ starter James Shields (5-5) for 10 runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings.
The Marlins pounded out 15 hits and scored five times in the third inning and four more in the fourth. Cody Ross had a two-run double in the third and rookie Mike Stanton cracked a two-run triple in the inning.
Gaby Sanchez belted a three-run homer in the fifth to put the game out of reach. He added a two-run shot in the seventh inning.
Chris Coghlan had four hits and scored four times in the contest.
The Rays, who made things interesting late off against the Florida bullpen, got a homer from Carlos Pena in the sixth inning. Pena now has 14 home runs this season and has homered in five straight games.
