Franklin Gutierrez homered for the go-ahead run in the fifth inning and had two RBIs as the host Seattle Mariners earned a 3-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night.
Jason Vargas (7-5) earned the win, allowing three hits and two runs in six innings as Seattle ended a seven-game losing streak. Relievers Jamey Wright and Brandon League each pitched one scoreless inning and closer David Aardsma earned his 19th save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Gutierrez hit his 10th homer off Colby Lewis (9-8), who took the loss. Lewis allowed three runs on nine hits in six innings, striking out nine and walking one.
Seattle’s top of the order went 7-for-12 as Chone Figgins had three hits, Ichiro Suzuki two and Gutierrez two.
Texas’ runs scored on sacrifice flies by Michael Young and Bengie Molina.
Before the game, Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik gave a vote of confidence to manager Don Wakamatsu, who had come under fire for the team's recent struggles.
