Clayton Richard pitched seven innings of one-run baseball and Matt Stairs homered as the San Diego Padres escaped with a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field on Saturday night.
Richard (4-2) struck out six and had no walks to hand the Mariners their 12th one-run loss this season.
The loss also snapped Seattleās modest two-game winning streak one night after they scored a season-high 15 runs on 15 hits.
Stairs hit his first homer of the season off Mariners starter Ian Snell (0-3). Snell returned to the rotation after pitching in long relief for a few weeks. He went five innings, allowing five hits.
The winning run came in the sixth inning when Chase Headley doubled and then scored on a wild pitch by reliever Kanekoa Texeira.
Seattle pulled to 2-1 in the sixth when Mike Sweeney singled in Ichiro Suzuki. The Mariners threatened with runners on the corners with one out in the ninth, but Padres closer Heath Bell got the final two outs for his 12th save.
