Carl Crawford tripled and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Gabe Kapler in the eighth inning as the Tampa Bay Rays rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.
Tampa Bay did just enough to beat 2008 Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee (1-2).
With the game tied at 1-1, Crawford led off the eighth by ripping a triple to left field and scored one batter later when Kapler lifted a fly ball to left. The Rays won of late-game heroics on Saturday as well with a walk-off homer by Willy Aybar.
Rafael Soriano then worked around a one-out single in the ninth to record his 10th save in as many chances. Dan Wheeler (2-0) got the final two outs of the eighth to earn the win.
Lee was on cruise control, and carried a 1-0 lead into the seventh before Tampa staged another rally.
B.J. Upton drilled a one-out double and scored on a two-out single by Sean Rodriguez. The Rays had been held to just two hits up until that point.
Lee allowed two runs and five hits in eight innings, with a season high 10 strikeouts. The lefthander walked one.
Lee’s counterpart Matt Garza was impressive as well. He faltered in the fifth when he allowed three straight hits to start the frame. Michael Saunders capped the surge with an RBI single to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead.
Garza wasn’t able to get his American-League best sixth win. He allowed one run and five hits in six innings. He struck out two and walked two.
