Marcus Thames singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the New York Yankees edged the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 7-6 Sunday afternoon.
The Yankees secured the series victory after Thames' hit to left-center field brought home Robinson Cano, who opened the 10th with a walk. The game went to extra innings after Mariano Rivera suffered a rare blown save in the top of the ninth.
Yankees reliever David Robertson (1-3) earned the victory after putting the go-ahead run in scoring position but working out of trouble in the top of the 10th.
Toronto reliever David Purcey (0-1) absorbed the loss.
Brett Gardner had a two-run inside-the-park home run to lead the Yankees, while Mark Teixeira had three hits and drove in a pair of runs. Nick Swisher added three hits in the victory.
DeWayne Wise hit his first home run as a Blue Jay, a three-run shot in the fifth. He added the game-tying RBI single in the ninth off Rivera, who suffered his second blown save of the season.
Lyle Overbay and Adam Lind also went deep for Toronto, while Jose Bautista added three hits in the loss.
Yankees starter Phil Hughes struggled for the second start in a row, allowing five runs on six hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out five.
Brandon Morrow was equally shaky for Toronto, surrendering five runs on nine hits in his six-inning effort. Morrow struck out seven and walked one.
