Jason Bay ended a season-long power drought with a pair of homers and Johan Santana outdueled CC Sabathia as the New York Mets beat the cross-town Yankees 6-4 Sunday night.
Bay entered the game with just one home run in his first 161 at-bats with the Mets. But the marquee free-agent acquisition teed off on Sabathia, crushing a two-run homer in the second inning and adding some insurance with a solo shot in the fifth.
The outfielder, who was also hit by a pitch and drew a walk, went 7-for-10 in the series. He has 10 hits in his last 15 at-bats, raising his average from .270 to a team-leading .307.
Bay’s outburst made a winner out of Santana (4-2), who threw a masterful 7 2/3 innings for his first victory since April 27. The two-time Cy Young winner allowed just six hits, walking three and striking out five.
Sabathia (4-3) surrendered six runs – five earned – on 10 hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out six.
Derek Jeter led the way for the Yankees with three hits, including an RBI double in the ninth inning that made things interesting.
