Carlos Pena broke out of a lengthy slump with a pair of homers as the Tampa Bay Rays extended their winning streak to six games Thursday with an 8-6 win over the New York Yankees.
Pena, who hadn’t homered since Apr. 28, ripped a solo homer to right field in the sixth inning and added a solo shot to center in the eighth. The power-hitting first baseman now has eight homers on the season, and the two-hit night raised his average to .194.
Ben Zobrist added his first home run of the season and B.J. Upton also went deep as the Rays swept the two-game mini-series at Yankee Stadium. Tampa Bay improved to 17-4 on the road heading into a three-game interleague series against the Astros in Houston.
James Shields (5-1) earned the win, allowing four runs on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out seven. Rafael Soriano recorded his 11th save.
Juan Miranda hit a two-run homer and Derek Jeter added three hits and two RBIs for New York, which has lost three straight.
Yankees starter Andy Pettitte (5-1) was victimized for seven runs in just five innings in his worst start of the season. The left-hander’s ERA rose from 1.79 to 2.68 in the loss.
