Matt Joyce belted the go-ahead grand slam in Tampa Bay's seven-run eighth inning as the Rays rallied to beat the Minnesota Twins 8-6 Saturday.
Trailing 4-1 entering the eighth, Tampa strung together five consecutive hits to tie the game. With two out and the bases loaded, Joyce – pinch hitting for Gabe Kapler – deposited a Matt Guerrier offering over the center field wall to complete the comeback.
The Twins attempted a rally of their own in the ninth inning, trimming the deficit to 8-6 on a Jim Thome RBI double and a Denard Span run-scoring single. Tampa closer Rafael Soriano settled down, and induced Orlando Hudson to ground out, ending the game.
Randy Choate (1-2) earned the victory with a scoreless inning of relief, while Soriano picked up his 20th save.
Thome homered twice in defeat for the Twins, moving into 10th on the all-time list with 574. He homered on his first two at-bats to pass Harmon Killebrew.
Guerrier took the loss (1-4), surrendering four runs in the Minnesota meltdown.
