Juan Rivera hit his second homer of the game with one out in the 11th inning to lift the Los Angeles Angels to a 5-4 victory over the host Texas Rangers on Friday night.
Rivera’s homer off Matt Harrison (3-2) held up when Michael Kohn struck out Michael Young with two on in the bottom of the 11th for his first career save.
Mitch Moreland homered twice for Texas and was on the front end of a game-tying double steal with two outs in the ninth.
Moreland was on third when Esteban German broke off first. Angels closer Fernando Rodney struggled with handling the rundown and Moreland broke for home when Rodney tossed the ball to Rivera. Moreland beat the first baseman’s throw home.
Los Angeles had taken a 3-2 lead in the eighth on a single by Maicer Izturis. Rivera added a ninth-inning homer.
Rich Thompson (2-0) recorded the victory for Los Angeles.
Jered Weaver gave up two runs and six hits in seven innings. Both runs came on homers by Moreland.
Torii Hunter homered in the fourth for the first Los Angeles run.
Texas star Josh Hamilton played for the first time since breaking ribs on Sept. 4 and was hitless in three at-bats.
