Jhoulys Chacin recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts but was done in by a costly error as his Colorado Rockies fell to the Los Angeles Angels 10-3 on Sunday.
A throwing error by third baseman Ian Stewart with two outs in the fourth preserved the inning for Los Angeles. Mike Napoli followed that play by launching a three-run homer, turning a 2-1 Colorado lead into a 4-2 deficit.
The error ruined what was otherwise a sparkling day by the 22-year-old Chacin (4-7), who went six innings and gave up five runs – two earned – on five hits and three walks.
The Angels added another run in the fifth when Brandon Wood scored on a Howie Kendrick double play.
Los Angeles starter Ervin Santana was the benefactor of Colorado’s error, earning the win to improve his record to 8-5. He struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits while walking one.
The Rockies cut the lead to 5-3 in the seventh on a Clint Barmes single, but the Angels put the game out of reach with five runs in the eighth.
Juan Rivera plated Bobby Abreu with a double and Wood launched a two-out grand slam down the left-field line to give the Angels a 10-3 advantage.
Colorado opened the scoring in the second with a solo home run by Stewart. Giambi’s double in the fourth made it 2-0.
Los Angeles’ first run came in the fourth when Hideki Matsui singled in Bobby Abreu.
