This one seemed destined for a pitching duel with two of the top pitchers in the American League facing off. But it turns out a slugfest was on tap.
And the Texas Rangers needed 12 hits, including three home runs, to pull out an 8-7 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night in Arlington.
With the victory the Rangers (22-18) completed a two-game sweep of the Angels (18-23).
Rangers third baseman Michael Young delivered what proved to be the go-ahead run in the sixth, an RBI single to right field with the game tied 7-7.
Young also had a two-run home run in the third inning that gave Texas an early 2-0 lead.
The Angels answered in the fourth, scoring five runs off Rangers starter C.J. Wilson. Bobby Abreu had an RBI single and both Torii Hunter and Juan Rivera had two-run blasts to give the Angels a 5-2 lead.
But the Rangers eventually rallied, getting home runs from Vladimir Guerrero in the fourth and Ian Kinsler in the fifth inning. Nelson Cruz had a two-run double in the fifth as well.
Angels starter Jered Weaver lasted only 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs (all earned) on nine hits with three walks and a strikeout. His ERA rose from 2.47 to 3.40.
Wilson went 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs (all earned) on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts. His ERA rose from 1.48 to 2.55.
