Cliff Pennington hit a three-run homer and Gio Gonzalez tossed six solid innings as the Oakland Athletics posted a 10-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday.
Rajai Davis and Daric Barton each had three hits and a pair of RBIs for the A’s, who pounded out 13 hits.
Gonzalez (1-0) gave up two runs on six hits to go with six strikeouts in earning the win.
The A’s got to Angels starter Matt Palmer early, scoring three runs in the first inning off the right-hander. Palmer (0-1) was tagged for five earned runs on eight hits in five innings of work.
Pennington extended the lead to 10-2 in the seventh with his blast to right field, the fifth of his young career.
Kevin Kouzmanoff, Kurt Suzuki and Eric Chavez all drove in a run for Oakland.
Hideki Matsui and Juan Rivera hit solo home runs for the Angels, who have dropped four straight since an Opening Day win against the Minnesota Twins.
Los Angeles scored two runs in the ninth with the game already out of hand.
