Kansas City’s Bruce Chen was perfect through six innings as the Royals earned a 4-2 victory and series win over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night.
Chen (5-2) retired the first 18 Los Angeles hitters before Erick Aybar led off the seventh inning with a single. Chen was lifted after Jeff Mathis hit a homer in the eighth. He allowed just two hits and one run in 7 1/3 innings, with three strikeouts and a walk.
Closer Joakim Soria had the bases loaded in the ninth and allowed Mike Napoli to hit a sacrifice fly before earning his 22nd save in 23 opportunities.
The Royals took a 2-0 lead in the eighth on Jose Guillen’s two-run single off Ervin Santana (8-6), who allowed all four runs on seven hits in 8 1/3 innings.
After Mathis’ homer, the Royals took a 4-1 lead in the ninth on Jason Kendall’s RBI fielder’s choice and a wild pitch from Francisco Rodriguez that scored Yuniesky Betancourt, who had singled.
