Colby Rasmus belted a three-run home run and Skip Schumaker added a two-run homer to carry the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday afternoon.
Blake Hawksworth (2-4) picked up the win with five solid innings as an emergency starter. He allowed two runs - one earned - on two hits with one walk in his second start of the season after working mostly from the bullpen.
The offense backed the right-hander up by doing all of its scoring in two innings. Rasmus hit his 15th of the campaign off Royals starter Kyle Davies in the fourth. Schumaker followed up an inning later with Aaron Miles on base for his second blast of the season.
Four relievers made the lead stand up with Ryan Franklin working the last 1 1/3 innings for his 15th save.
Davies (4-6) was charged with five runs - four earned - on six hits in seven innings of work.
David DeJesus broke the shutout in the sixth with a two-run single and Jose Guillen extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a run-scoring single in the eighth.
