Max Scherzer made a strong return to the rotation and Miguel Cabrera homered as the Detroit Tigers snapped a four-game slide by crushing the Oakland Athletics 10-2 on Sunday.
Scherzer (2-4) was sent to the minors two weeks ago after allowing 27 runs in 18 innings over four starts, but looked like a completely different pitcher on Sunday. He recorded a career-high 14 strikeouts in 5 2/3 scoreless frames to earn the win.
The 25-year-old right-hander allowed just two hits while walking four.
The Tigers picked up single runs in each of the first four innings and another in the sixth off Oakland starter Dallas Braden. Magglio Ordonez, Gerald Laird and Cabrera each picked up RBI hits while Brandon Inge hit a solo blast in the fourth and Carlos Guillen added one in the sixth.
Braden (4-5) was charged with five runs on 11 hits in six innings to suffer the loss. The right-hander has not earned a win in four starts since pitching a perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays on May 9.
Detroit broke it wide open with five runs in the eighth, the big blow coming when Cabrera drove his 14th homer of the season - a three-run shot - to deep left off right-hander Vin Mazzaro.
