Jeff Mathis' sacrifice fly in the 16th inning gave the Los Angeles Angels a 4-3 win over the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday night.
Torii Hunter led off the inning against Hector Ambriz (0-2) with a double and took third on a groundout. Mathis followed with a fly ball to deep right to end the marathon affair.
Matt Palmer (1-1) pitched three scoreless innings for the win as both teams used eight pitchers apiece.
The Angels took a 3-2 lead into the ninth, but Fernando Rodney blew his fourth save of the season. Matt LaPorta singled to lead off, Jason Donald singled with one out and pinch-hitter Jayson Nix's bloop hit to left tied the game.
The Indians barely survived the bottom of the inning with Joe Smith pitching. Alberto Callaspo singled with one out and Mike Napoli walked. Erick Aybar's groundout moved the runners to second and third.
With Juan Rivera up, Smith's pitch eluded catcher Lou Marson and rolled a few feet from home plate. Marson quickly got to the ball and his throw to Smith covering the plate was in time to get Callaspo.
Center fielder Michael Brantley robbed Rivera of a home run with a leaping catch at the fence in the 10th.
Los Angeles starter Scott Kazmir held the Indians to one run and two hits in six innings.
Andy Marte hit a solo home run in the seventh for the Indians.
