After two miscues by the Chicago White Sox, Gerald Laird singled home the go-ahead run in the 11th inning as the Detroit Tigers endured a furious rally for a 9-7 victory on Sunday night and a three-game series sweep at U.S. Cellular Field.
After retiring the first two hitters in the 11th, Chicago reliever Sergio Santos (2-2) struck out Brandon Inge, but the ball got away from catcher A.J. Pierzynski and his wild throw to first allowed Inge to end up at third. After an intentional walk to Brendan Boesch, Laird singled home Inge and Austin Jackson plated Boesch with a run-scoring base hit.
Pieryzinski had three hits and drove in two runs for the White Sox, who dropped all six games of a homestand against Minnesota and Detroit to fall from six back of the Twins to 10 back with 13 games left. Chicago was tied with Minnesota on Aug. 11.
Robbie Weinhardt (1-0) worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the win. Eddie Bonine survived what would have been a three-run homer by Paul Konerko in the bottom of the 11th when his long drive just hooked foul and Daniel Schlereth struck out Manny Ramirez with the bases loaded for his first save.
Chicago rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth off relievers Phil Coke and Weinhardt with the tying run scoring on a wild pitch to force extra innings.
Detroit took command in the seventh with six runs for a 7-3 lead against Chicago starter John Danks. Casper Wells hit his third homer of the season, a two-run shot that tied the game at 3-3 and Will Rhymes greeted J.J. Putz with a two-run double to cap the frame.
