Rookie Dayan Viciedo’s single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth scored Juan Pierre with the winning run to lift the Chicago White Sox to a 5-4 win over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday.
The Red Sox were eliminated from the playoffs even before the loss as both the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays won on Tuesday.
J.D. Drew and David Ortiz homered for Boston, which blew leads of 3-0 and 4-2 lead in the contest. Carlos Quentin hit a two-run homer for Chicago.
Ortiz put Boston up by two with his 32nd homer of the season but Chicago eventually tied the game 4-4 in the eighth on an RBI double by Paul Konerko.
Pierre got things started in the ninth with a one-out infield single. He stole second and third base and scored when Viciedo’s line drive eluded a diving attempt by Daniel Nava in left field.
Chris Sale (2-0) threw two scoreless innings in relief to get the win. Michael Bowden (0-1) took the loss.
