Ty Wiggington hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to break open a tie game and lift the Baltimore Orioles to a 9-1-win over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park Tuesday night.
Wiggington’s 21st homer made a winner out of Brad Bergesen (8-12), who allowed five hits and a run in six innings.
Scott Atchison (2-3) took the loss. Atchison recorded just one out while allowing three runs in the seventh. The Orioles added another run in the eighth and four more in the ninth.
Boston took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Daniel Nava single and Clay Buchholz was sailing along until the sixth.
He struck out the first two batters of inning but then allowed a single to Adam Jones. Buchholz then got Felix Pie to pop to second base but Marco Scutaro dropped the ball and Jones scored all the way from first.
Buchholz left after the inning. He allowed just four hits while striking out five and lowered his ERA to 2.40. He threw 113 pitches.
