Ty Wigginton’s sacrifice fly scored Brian Roberts in the 11th inning and the Baltimore Orioles rallied to beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 on Thursday.
Corey Patterson’s homer in the eighth tied it and five Orioles relievers combined to pitch 7 2/3 shutout innings after starter Brian Matusz allowed five runs early on.
David Hernandez (5-7) pitched two innings for the win and Alfredo Simon allowed two hits in the 11th, but escaped for his 15th save.
It was the first game started by Kyle Davies this month that Kansas City lost. The Royals were 4-0 in his previous July starts and 4-14 the rest of the month.
The Royals did all their damage in the fourth when they sent 10 batters to the plate and chased Matusz from the game.
Blake Wood (0-2) took the loss after giving up a run in two innings.
Nick Markakis homered and Caesar Izturis added an RBI as Baltimore won for just the 14th time on the road this season.
