Chiefs 28, Jaguars 2: Alex Smith threw two touchdown passes and Jamaal Charles rushed for 77 yards and a score as visiting Kansas City topped its highest point total from a year ago while routing Jacksonville.

The Chiefs were dominant in every aspect in coach Andy Reid's debut, preventing Jacksonville from running an offensive play in Kansas City territory until late in the fourth quarter. Justin Houston had three of Kansas City's six sacks.

Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert was 16-for-35 for 121 yards with a pair of interceptions, one of which Tamba Hali returned 10 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Gabbert left in the fourth quarter with a cut on his right (throwing) hand and was replaced by Chad Henne, who led the Jaguars to the 3-yard line before throwing an incompletion on fourth down.

The Chiefs (1-0) didn't have a lead in regulation time until their ninth game a year ago, but they grabbed an early one Sunday and never let go. After Jacksonville (0-1) blocked a punt for a safety following Kansas City's first offensive series, the Chiefs scored touchdowns on three of their next five possessions to take a commanding 21-2 halftime lead.

The defenses controlled the second half, as the only points after halftime came on Hali's interception. Donnie Avery and Junior Hemingway caught touchdown passes from Smith, who was 21-for-34 for 173 yards.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Kansas City WR Dwayne Bowe caught four passes for 30 yards to raise his career total to 419, passing Henry Marshall for the second-most receptions in franchise history. … Jaguars P Bryan Anger set a franchise record with 11 punts. He averaged 50.5 yards per kick. … The Chiefs' 14 points in the first quarter were their most in a period since they scored 14 in the fourth quarter versus Buffalo in Week 2 last year.
