Will Douglas scored 26 points and Prairie View A&M never trailed after scoring the game's first eight points in a 70-59 victory against visiting Washington State on Tuesday night in Prairie View, Texas.
Jeremiah Gambrell added 19 points for the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Panthers (3-0), who outscored Washington State in the paint 28-10. Prairie View's largest lead was 21 points midway in the second half.
Douglas hit 11 of 20 shots and Prairie View sank 9 of 19 (47.4 percent) from behind the arc.
TJ Bamba scored 16 points to lead the Pac-12's Cougars (1-2), who shot 32.6 percent (14-for-43) overall and 7-for-21 from 3-point territory.
Washington State's DJ Rodman, son of former NBA star Dennis Rodman, did not play due to illness. Rodman is averaging 10 points and 8.5 rebounds per game this season.
Jabe Mullins' 3-pointer pulled Washington State within 46-36 with 14:20 remaining. That was the closest the Cougars had been since late in the first half.
After Prairie View ‘s Tekorian Smith and Washington State's Justin Powell exchanged 3-pointers, the Panthers reeled off 10 straight points to take a 59-39 advantage with 11:07 to go.
The Cougars didn't get closer than nine points with 18 seconds left.
The Panthers led by as many as 18 en route to building a 41-27 halftime lead. Washington State never got closer than nine points during the half's final 16 minutes.
Douglas scored 15 first-half points, going 6-for-9 from the field. Prairie View shot 56.7 percent (17-for-30), including 5-for-10 from 3-point territory, in the opening half.
Washington State sank just 7 of 22 (31.8 percent) first-half shots, including 3 of 11 from behind the arc.
