Miami frittered away all but four points of an early 21-point advantage but hung on to upset No. 22 Butler 85-75 and capture the title of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday night in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Guard Angel Rodriguez led the way with 19 points for the Hurricanes (5-0). Guard Ja'Quan Newton added 17 points and center Tonye Jekiri had 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Butler guard Kellen Dunham led all scorers with 23 points, dropping in five 3-pointers after scoring just three points in the first half. Guard Roosevelt Jones added 19 for the Bulldogs (3-1).
The unranked Hurricanes jumped out to a 40-19 lead with under three minutes left in the first half and led 42-29 at the break before the Butler began working its way back.
The Bulldogs got their deficit into single digits just over seven minutes into the second half. Thanks to the 3-point shooting of Dunham, they were within 76-72 with just 3:30 left in the game after a 7-0 run.
But the Hurricanes regained control and finished on an 9-3 run for their fifth double-digit victory of the season.
