No. 16 Michigan 77, Purdue 76: Glenn Robinson III caught the inbounds pass, dribbled once and converted a layup at the buzzer as the Wolverines stunned the host Boilermakers.
Robinson, whose father was an All-American at Purdue, finished with 17 points and eight rebounds for Michigan (20-7, 12-3 Big Ten). Nik Stauskas missed a go-ahead layup chance in overtime but finished with 15 points while Caris LeVert had 14 and Jordan Morgan collected 13 points and nine rebounds.
Terone Johnson scored 22 points and Ronnie Johnson added 21 for the Boilermakers (15-13, 5-10), who dropped their third straight. A.J. Hammons scored 11 points and Kendall Stephens had 10 but missed the front end of a 1-and-1 chance with 12 seconds left in overtime.
Purdue held a six-point lead with just over three minutes left in regulation, but a pair of key turnovers helped Michigan tie it up and another gave the Wolverines a chance to win before Stauskas’ 3-pointer in the final seconds missed the mark. Stauskas’ dunk in overtime gave Michigan its first lead of the game and it went back and forth in the extra period until Ronnie Johnson’s free throws gave the Boilermakers a 76-75 lead with 31 seconds left.
Purdue came out on fire behind Terone Johnson, who scored 16 points in the first 12 1/2 minutes to help stake the Boilermakers to a 27-8 lead. The Wolverines picked up the pace briefly and cut the deficit to 37-24 at the half before pulling within 50-49 on Zak Irvin’s 3-pointer with just over nine minutes left.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Boilermakers were playing their first game without G Sterling Carter, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in a loss at Nebraska on Sunday. … Purdue came into the contest last in the Big Ten in free-throw percentage but knocked down 17-of-18 at the line. … Michigan is a game up on Michigan State for first place in the Big Ten and owns the head-to-head tiebreaker with three games left in the regular season.
