Tigers 2, Phillies 1: Doug Fister tossed eight spectacular innings and Alex Avila doubled in a pair of runs as host Detroit took the opener of the three-game interleague series.

Fister (9-5) allowed only an unearned run while limiting Philadelphia to just three singles. He struck out six and walked one en route to winning his third consecutive outing.

Cole Hamels (4-13) was the tough-luck loser after giving up two runs and six hits in seven frames. Michael Young provided the offense with an RBI single in the third for the punchless Phillies, who have scored just 10 runs during a season-high six-game losing streak.

Hamels stranded a runner at second base in the first and survived a double and a single in the second when Jhonny Peralta was caught trying to dash home from third on a double steal. However, Hernan Perez walked and Ramon Santiago doubled with one out in the fifth before Avila drove them in with a shot to left-center to give Detroit the lead.

Fister retired the side in order in the first, second, fifth, sixth and seventh innings before turning it over to Joaquin Benoit, who left a runner at third in the ninth for his 10th save in as many chances.
