Marlins 5, Nationals 2: Josh Johnson outdueled Gio Gonzalez and Carlos Lee drove in three runs to earn visiting Miami a doubleheader split.
Jose Reyes extended his career-high hitting streak to 22 games with a 3-for-5 effort and Greg Dobbs added an RBI single for the Marlins, who dropped the opener 7-4.
Johnson (7-7), who was the subject of several trade rumors prior to Tuesday’s deadline, ended up staying with the only franchise for which he has ever played and turned in one of his better efforts against Washington. The right-hander allowed two runs (one earned) and five hits, striking out nine and walking none over 8 2/3 innings.
Gonzalez (13-6) held the Marlins off the board until the sixth, when Reyes’ single loaded the bases with two outs. Lee followed and lined a first-pitch fastball into center for a two-run single.
Dobbs added an RBI single to make it 3-1.
Lee delivered an RBI groundout in the eighth off Gonzalez, who was charged with four runs on nine hits. The left-hander struck out 10 and did not walk a batter.
The Marlins tacked on an insurance run in the ninth on Emilio Bonifacio’s RBI single.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Game 1 starters John Lannan (Washington) and Brad Hand (Miami) will both be returned to the minors after serving as their respective team’s 26th man for the doubleheader. … Nationals OF Jayson Werth got the nightcap off after scoring twice in the opener. Werth (wrist), who came off the disabled list Thursday, will get occasional rest. … The Nationals will have to make another roster move Saturday, when newly acquired C Kurt Suzuki joins the team.
