Freddie Freeman hit a three-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning to break a scoreless duel between Atlanta rookie Mike Soroka and a trio of Padres pitchers, leading the Braves to a 4-1 victory that completed a three-game sweep in San Diego on Sunday.
Soroka (10-1) shut out the Padres on six hits and a walk with nine strikeouts over seven innings. Left-hander A.J. Minter picked up his fifth save.
The pitching matchup between Canadians Soroka and Cal Quantrill was a scoreless draw through six innings, with the Padres starter blanking the Braves on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Craig Stammen followed with a perfect seventh.
But Trey Wingenter (1-2) quickly ran into trouble in the eighth, giving up back-to-back singles to right field to pinch hitter Matt Joyce and Ronald Acuna Jr., putting runners at the corners. Wingenter then struck out Dansby Swanson for the second out in the inning.
But Freeman drove the first pitch he saw from Wingenter 394 feet into the right-field seats.
Josh Donaldson then drew a walk from Wingenter, stole second and scored on a single by Nick Markakis to make it 4-0.
San Diego rookie shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. had his first four-hit game.
The Padres scored in the bottom of the eighth and had the bases loaded with two outs when Chad Sobotka, Atlanta's third pitcher of the inning, struck out Hunter Renfroe to end the threat.
Tatis opened the inning with a single off Touki Toussaint, who loaded the bases on a single to Eric Hosmer and a walk to Franmil Reyes. Josh Naylor's third hit of the game drove in Tatis before Sobotka came on to fan Renfroe.
The Padres had the best opportunity to score during the first seven innings. With Tatis on first and two outs in the fifth, Acuna made a running, leaping catch at the wall in center to deny Manny Machado an extra-base hit.
