St. John's 64, Monmouth 54: Phil Greene IV scored a game-high 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds as the host Red Storm won their third straight game.
JaKarr Sampson added 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds for St. John's (3-1), which overcame 50 percent shooting from the foul line. D'Angelo Harrison pitched in 15 points and Chris Obekpa blocked a season-high nine shots.
Justin Robinson paced Monmouth (1-3) with 15 points. Andrew Nicholas pitched in nine while shooting 2-of-11 from the field and 0-of-5 from 3-point range.
Monmouth ran out to a 14-7 lead before Greene and Max Hooper hit 3-pointers to key a 21-12 turnaround and give the Red Storm a 28-26 lead at halftime. After the Hawks pulled ahead briefly in the second half, Sampson made a layup to tie the game at 40 with 14:02 to play.
Sampson scored two more baskets as St. John's regained the lead and built it to 50-41 with just over seven minutes left. Monmouth would get as close as 54-51 on a Deon Jones jumper with 3:18 left, but Harrison made one 3-pointer before another deep ball by Greene made the score 62-54 with 1:05 to go.
GAME NOTEBOOK: No player beside Greene, Sampson and Harrison scored more than four points for St. John's. … Jones had nine points and six rebounds for Monmouth, which shot 2-of-18 from long range. … The Hawks outrebounded the Red Storm 44-35.
