Pittsburgh 86, Fordham 51: J.J. Moore poured in 20 points off the bench and Steven Adams added 13 on 5-of-5 shooting as the host Panthers cruised past the Rams in the NIT Season Tip-Off.
Tray Woodall collected 12 points and five assists for Pittsburgh (2-0), which followed up a school-record 70.8 percent shooting performance in its opener with a 53.1 percent night Monday. The Panthers will host Lehigh in the second round Tuesday.
Bryan Smith scored nine of his 11 points in the first half for Fordham (0-2), which will get its fill of Big East competition over the next six weeks. The Rams have trips to St. John’s and Connecticut remaining on the non-conference slate.
The Panthers scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed. Fordham would draw as close as 16-15 midway through the half before Pittsburgh turned it on, getting eight points from Moore during a 21-3 burst to close the half.
Moore scored eight more points during a 15-4 run in the second half that stretched the lead to 58-31 with 9:09 to play.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Pittsburgh improved to 93-3 against non-conference opponents at the Petersen Events Center. … Panthers F Lamar Patterson, who was the only player to shoot less than 50 percent in the opener, went 2-of-5 from the field and chipped in six assists. … The Rams shot 36.6 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 18 times.
