Rod Singleton led the way with 18 points and Tre Johnson added 15 points and six rebounds as Montana State held off host Utah to earn a 70-62 victory on Saturday.
Mohammed Fall chipped in 12 points on 6-of-6 shooting for the Bobcats (2-1), who shot 52 percent (27 of 52) in the game.
The Utes had it tied up, 55-55, after a pair of free throws by Josh Watkins with 6:30 left but went cold, missing four straight field goal attempts and the front end of a one-and-one.
Montana State took advantage, regaining the lead on Singleton’s jumper and pushing it out to 59-55, when Johnson knocked down an outside shot.
Utah went over four minutes without a field goal until Jason Washburn snuck inside for a dunk with 2:17 on the clock, pulling it to within 61-59.
But Christian Moon got a steal and knocked down a 3-pointer and Jamie Stewart hit a pair of free throws to keep the Bobcats clear.
The Utes (1-2) are rebuilding around first-year coach Larry Krystkowiak and 13 new players. One of only two seniors on the roster, Watkins led with 22 points on Saturday but committed seven turnovers.
