Rookie Sandy Alcantara earned his second win in his second major league start, pitching seven scoreless innings and leading the Miami Marlins to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night.
Rookie left fielder Austin Dean supported Alcantara by driving in both of Miami's runs.
The Phillies failed to take advantage of the last-place Marlins in this three-game series, losing twice. Philadelphia, in second place in the National League East, sits three games behind the Atlanta Braves.
Alcantara (2-0) got 14 swings-and-misses on his 97 pitches, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out six.
Alcantara, who was traded to the Marlins by the St. Louis Cardinals in last winter's Marcell Ozuna deal, lowered his ERA to 0.75.
Nick Pivetta (7-11) took the loss, allowing three hits, two walks and two runs in four innings. He struck out four.
Miami opened the scoring in the second inning. Derek Dietrich led off by drawing a full-count walk, advanced to second on a Miguel Rojas groundout and went to third on Lewis Brinson's infield single. Dietrich then scored when Dean hit a ground ball to third and beat out Philadelphia's attempt to turn an inning-ending double play.
The Marlins made it 2-0 in the fourth, and Dietrich was the spark again, leading off the inning with a hit-by-pitch. He advanced to second on Rojas' infield single and raced to third on a Brinson flyout. Dean then hit a 94 mph fastball to center for an RBI single.
Philadelphia closed the deficit to 2-1 in the eighth. Pinch hitter Jose Bautista hit a two-out double and scored on a single by Asdrubal Cabrera, who belted a changeup from reliever Kyle Barraclough.
Both Bautista and Cabrera were acquired from the New York Mets in the past two months.
Drew Steckenrider pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the year. He has five career saves, including three against the Phillies.
