Caleb Catto scored a team-high 18 points and Dakota Rivers made five 3-pointers to lead visiting Florida Gulf Coast to a 66-62 win over the Miami Hurricanes in a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon.
Catto made 4 of 7 from beyond the arc for FGCU (3-1), which made 13 of 30 from 3-point range (43.3 percent).
Rivers, who finished with 15 points, made 5 of 11 from beyond the arc after entering the game 1-of-6 from 3-point range this season.
Miami (3-1) made just 3 of 19 from 3-point range (15.8 percent). Isaiah Wong, who led the Hurricanes with a game-high 20 points, made two of those 3-pointers in the final minute.
The poor shooting negated Miami's advantage on the interior, where the Hurricanes outrebounded the Eagles 44-28 (15-8 on the offensive glass).
Nysier Brooks, Miami's 7-foot center and a transfer from Cincinnati, had 13 points, a game-high 15 rebounds and two blocks. It was Brooks' fourth career double-double and his first with Miami.
Wong added three steals, including two that he took the other way for layups.
Chris Lykes, who made the ACC's All-Preseason team, missed his second straight game due to an ankle injury. Miami also lost starting wing guard Kameron McGusty due to a right hamstring injury sustained with 15:29 left in the first half. Prior to his game, Lykes and McGusty combined to average 29.2 points.
Backup center Rodney Miller also was injured in the first half, suffering a left-knee ailment. Miami's Sam Waardenburg is out for the year, and touted freshman Earl Timberlake is out another couple of weeks, both due to injuries.
Down to just eight healthy scholarship players, Miami gave walk-on Willie Herenton some first-half minutes.
Guard Jalen Warren, a senior who leads the Eagles in scoring (14.0), missed the game due to a violation of team rules.
The score was tied at 28 at halftime. There were nine lead changes and five tie scores in those first 20 minutes.
Miami dominated the first-half numbers inside the paint, including a 22-13 rebounding advantage (plus-four on the offensive glass).
But the Eagles were far better on 3-pointers, making 7-of-17 (41.2 percent). Miami shot just 1-for-9 from distance (11.1 percent).
FGCU surged ahead 39-34 with 13 minutes left in the second half - its largest lead to that point - and held on from there.
