Cavaliers 114, Heat 88: LeBron James had 23 points, eight rebounds and seven assists and Kyrie Irving also scored 23 points and as host Cleveland defeated Miami for its 10th win in 12 games.
Iman Shumpert had 17 points and four steals for the Cavaliers, who are comfortably in second place in the Eastern Conference with six games left. Tristan Thompson collected 15 rebounds, Matthew Dellavedova scored 14 points and J.R. Smith added 12 points as Cleveland made 15 3-pointers while winning its 17th consecutive home game.
Luol Deng and Hassan Whiteside scored 17 points apiece for the Heat, who lost Dwyane Wade to a bruised knee in the second quarter. James Ennis had 12 points for Miami, which has lost five of its last seven games and fell into a tie with the Boston Celtics for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East.
James converted a three-point play and Smith drained a 3-pointer during an 8-0 burst to end the third quarter as Cleveland took a 91-72 advantage. The Heat trailed by 17 early in the fourth quarter before Dellavedova hit back-to-back 3-pointers as the Cavaliers pushed the lead to 23 with 8:05 left and were never again threatened.
Cleveland led by seven points after the first quarter before using a 7-0 to run to take a 50-31 lead on Shumpert’s 3-pointer with 6:30 remaining in the second quarter. Miami whittled its deficit to 61-50 at the break and was within 75-65 after Goran Dragic’s 3-pointer with 5:48 left in the third before the Cavaliers began pulling away.
GAME NOTEBOOK: James (24,837) moved into 20th place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list, passing Patrick Ewing (24,815). … Wade was injured with 6:24 left in the second quarter and there was no immediate timetable per how long he will be sidelined. … Cleveland PF Kevin Love (back) was again out of the lineup after the injury flared up.
