Spurs 111, Trail Blazers 109: Patty Mills scored 13 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter and Marco Belinelli added 20 points as visiting San Antonio slipped past Portland.
Manu Ginobili scored 16 points in 19 minutes off the bench for the Spurs, who rested veteran Tim Duncan due to general soreness while also being without injured Tony Parker for the second straight game. Danny Green added 16 points and Tiago Splitter scored 15 as San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich notched his 945th career victory, moving past Bill Fitch into ninth place on the all-time wins list.
Damian Lillard scored 31 points and Mo Williams added 19 off the bench for the Trail Blazers, who were without LaMarcus Aldridge (groin). Wesley Matthews tallied 18 points and Robin Lopez contributed 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Mills scored 11 points over the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter to give the Spurs a 99-90 lead before Portland recovered with an 11-2 burst and tied the game on Matthews’ steal and dunk with 1:51 to play. Belinelli put San Antonio back ahead with a 3-pointer and later hit two free throws with 2.2 seconds left to make it a two-possession game as San Antonio won in Portland for only the second time in its last 11 visits.
The Trail Blazers led 52-51 at halftime before the Spurs controlled the first half of the third quarter to open up a 69-60 lead. Portland responded with a 19-6 surge to take a four-point lead before settling for an 81-79 advantage entering the final stanza.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Mills is averaging 21 points over the last seven games. … F Dorell Wright (10 points in 20 minutes) moved into the starting lineup with Aldridge out, marking the first time all season Portland had a change in its starting five. … Splitter (shin) returned after a four-game absence while SF Kawhi Leonard (finger) missed his 13th straight game.
