Jason Terry forced overtime and scored the go-ahead points in the extra session to finish with 34, leading the Dallas Mavericks to a 101-100 victory over the visiting San Antonio Spurs on Sunday.
Vince Carter scored 21 points and Dirk Nowitzki finished with 10 on 5-of-14 shooting in a rusty return following a four-game absence.
Terry hit a go-ahead jumper from the baseline with 41 seconds left in overtime and added two free throws with 17 ticks remaining as Dallas was able to hold on.
The Spurs were down 18 points in the third quarter and trailed 69-58 at the beginning of the fourth quarter but quickly overcame the deficit with a 3-point barrage. San Antonio hit five 3-pointers during a 17-2 surge to start the frame, getting two from Danny Green and one each from Gary Neal, Matt Bonner and James Anderson.
Neal took over later in the frame, hitting two more 3-pointers and scoring on four of five possessions to make it 89-82 with 3:35 left.
But as the Spurs got cold, Terry and Roddy Beaubois got hot for Dallas. The two scored all the points during a 9-2 run to close the fourth, including Terry’s 17-foot jumper with 0.6 seconds left that forced overtime.
Reserves scored the final 51 points for San Antonio, which sat all of its starters in the third quarter.
