PACERS 78, HEAT 75: David West collected 16 points and 10 rebounds as visiting Indiana outmuscled Miami and evened the Eastern Conference semifinals at a game apiece.
Paul George added 10 points and 11 rebounds and Roy Hibbert had 11 boards for the Pacers, who outrebounded Miami 50-40.
LeBron James collected 28 points and nine rebounds and Dwyane Wade scored 24 but Chris Bosh’s absence on the inside proved to be a big factor as the physical play seemed to wear down James and Wade in the fourth quarter.
James made a layup with 7:25 left to pull Miami to within 65-62 and was hit hard by Danny Granger, leading to some pushing and shoving and a double technical. James and Wade kept chipping away and the Heat finally took back the lead, 72-71, when Wade banked in a jumper from the right side.
The Pacers got it right back on Leandro Barbosa’s driving basket and Miami never recovered, failing to score in the final 2:40. Wade missed four field goal attempts in the final 2:05 and James failed to convert two free throws with 54 seconds left that would have tied the game.
Mario Chalmers missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.
The Heat led, 38-33, at the half but watched it slip away in the third quarter as Indiana used a 20-4 run to take a 61-50 lead.
The Pacers were still up, 65-56, with 9:27 left when the Heat began to make a charge.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Wade was called for a flagrant foul-1 with 9:27 left in the game when he knocked Darren Collison to the floor from behind on a fast break. … Granger fouled out in the fourth quarter with 11 points on 5-of-14 shooting. He is 6 for 24 in the series. … Ronny Turiaf started at center for the Heat but played only 13 minutes.
